Movie Story "때는 1934년, 로베르토(장 폴 벨몽도 분)와 자비에(미셸 콩스탕텡 분)는 어려서 시칠리아에서 함께 자라온 단짝 친구이다. 부모들이 죄를 짓고 죽어서 칼이란 남자가 이 둘과 자비에의 여동생 조르지아(클로디아 카르디날 분)를 돌봐 주었다. 칼은 결국 조르지아와 결혼하여 살고 있지만, 조르지아는 로베르토와 연인 사이이다. 건달로 자란 두 친구 중 덩치는 크지만 순진한 면이 있는 자비에는 마르세이유의 검은 조직, 빌라노바 패거리의 음모로 바텐더를 살해한 혐의로 20년형을 받고 복역한다. 그를 구해내기 위해 다방면으로 노력하는 로베르토는 빌라노바를 죽이고 그가 운영하는 카지노 클럽과 술집의 이익금을 챙긴다. 흑인들 패거리와의 결투 중 그들을 모두 죽인 뒤 부상을 당한 로베르토는 자비에처럼 20년형을 받는다. 감옥에서 다시 만난 그들은 서로 의지하며 지내다가 2차 대전을 맞는다. 해안가 모래 속에 파묻힌 불발탄을 찾는 작업을 하던 중 폭탄이 터져 자비에는 왼팔을 잃는다. 머리가 허옇게 세어 출소한 그들은 다시금 건달의 모습으로 돌아가지만, 자비에는 잃어버린 팔 때문에 사회에 적응하지 못한다. 로베르토는 자비에와 자신만을 기다려온 조르지아를 위해 한적한 시골집을 마련한다. 그러나 악당 패거리가 습격하여 사랑하는 친구의 목숨을 앗아간다. 백발의 모습으로 혼자 남은 로베르토는 친구의 원수를 갚기 위해 새벽을 향해 돌진한다.".
